Split Fiction launched earlier this week, and though EA or Hazelight Studios has yet to announce any sales, we think it’s safe to say that it’s a pretty big success. From being the first EA title in 13 years to achieve a 90+ average on Metacritic, to smashing the publisher’s previous Steam record for most concurrent players for a premium game.

Split Fiction Is a Resounding Success on Steam

Earlier today, Split Fiction broke a record for EA in terms of concurrent players, surpassing the 250k (via SteamDB) mark and making it the publisher’s biggest launch title on Steam thus far. The previous record holder for EA for a premium (non-free-to-play) title was 2018’s Battlefield V, which saw an all-time concurrent player count of 116k. It is an impressive feat, especially since the game isn’t free-to-play or some massive online multiplayer.

For reference, EA’s most concurrently played title on Steam is Apex Legend, which had 624,473 concurrent players at one point. The title is free-to-play, though.

However, one thing to note is that these concurrent players aren’t entirely due to purchased copies. While the metric isn’t a great one to grasp how many copies a game sold, it tells us how popular a game is and gives us a pretty fair idea that it’s selling well. But in the case of Split Fiction, and like previous Hazelight games, you only need a single copy of the game to play it, as you can invite another via friends pass.

Because of that, it is a bit harder to determine sales data and such. But even so, if we were to say unrealistically that half of those 254,756 concurrent players were playing via friends pass, meaning only 127,378 bought the game and then shared it with someone else, that still means that Split Fiction managed to break records for EA, as Battlefield V only managed to muster up 116,000 concurrent players. No matter how you look at it, that’s very impressive, and we’re glad to see a narrative-driven cooperative game like Split Fiction is getting the attention it deserves.

Split Fiction is now available worldwide for the PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC.
