Krafton Acquisition of Tango Gameworks Only Includes Hi-Fi Rush IP; The Evil Within & More Not Part of It

Earlier today, Krafton Inc. announced that they have acquired Tango Gameworks from Microsoft for an undisclosed sum that included the Hi-Fi Rush franchise. For those hoping that this acquisition means we’ll get to see The Evil Within 3 from Tango, well, that’s not happening — at least not from the studio.

We reached out to Krafton whether this acquisition meant that Krafton now owns the rights to The Evil Within, Ghostwire Tokyo franchises, and a PR rep confirmed it’s only Hi-Fi Rush stating, “It does not, KRAFTON is acquiring only the HI-FI RUSH IP and the development staff of Tango Gameworks.”

Well, that’s a bummer, no? While The Evil Within 2 was released way back in 2017, the franchise did have its own following, which I gather would have loved to see a third chapter get made. If not that, perhaps Tango could have released a remake of the first game for current-gen consoles as a sort of reboot. It looks like the possibility of that happening is next to nothing, unless Microsoft decides to make a new The Evil Within game developed by a different studio.

As for Ghostwire Tokyo, it was released in 2022, and while it didn’t gain as much of a foothold as Hi-Fi Rush or even The Evil Within, it was still a solid game by Tango (you can read our review of it here). It looks like any sequel or projects based on that IP will also be made without Tango Gameworks’ involvement.

Of course, this doesn’t mean we can’t get a spiritual sequel to The Evil Within.  Tango can craft a new horror game under Krafton’s publishing label, though we’re not sure whether Krafton is willing to bankroll another AAA horror game after The Callisto Protocol’s underwhelming stint at retail.
